TUC graduate academy and TUC writing lab give you the opportunity to advance your dissertation project by joining a writing group with fellow TUC doctoral students sharing the same objective and experiencing similar challenges. Dissertation writing groups create a supportive environment and generally consist of three activities: 1. Fellow doctoral students provide you with helpful feedback, and, vice versa, present their papers to you and ask for your opinion. 2. as a group member, you are invited to ask questions openly in order to cope with typical dissertation challenges and give intellectual and organizational advice peer-to-peer. 3. writing groups literally write together (you work on your own text in one room with others and at the same time), using innovative writing techniques and thus render writing a more social and even elating activity. Focus, range, and interval of the group sessions are dependent upon the Writing Groups needs and preferences.
During the workshop, you will realize the formation of autonomous writing groups, consisting of 3-5 members. In order to organize effective follow-up sessions you will practically learn how to plan and execute such meetings. Selected feedback and writing techniques let you experience how to produce and revise your texts efficiently. Above all, getting to know other doctoral students across disciplinary and institutional boundaries will help you feel the wide and motivating range of TUC graduate writers.
Requirements for participation: '
- min. ½ to max. 1 page summarizing/introducing your dissertation project
- min. 1 to max. 2 pages of a research paper/article/ book chapter (working Paper, not finished or reviewed, "raw material") (both texts in English, print-out)

The Clausthal University of Technology's computer center provides a cloud service for all university employees. The TU Cloud is an IT infrastructure that makes it possible to store files online on TUC's own servers, synchronize them between different end devices or share files with other TU members. The service also includes an office suite that enables documents, tables and presentations to be edited collaboratively in the browser. Real-time markers make it clear which user is currently working on which part of the document. Due to the tense situation with regard to cyber threats, risks and security tips will also be discussed in order to better protect cloud data against hacker attacks.
The workshop provides an overview of the potential of the Sync & Share service and shows how professional teamwork can be supported:
- First steps into the TU Cloud
- Joint, simultaneous work on files
- IT security aspects such as encryption methods

The seminar is aimed at academics who want to take an inquisitive look at their professional position.
What is the seminar about?
At the end of their doctorate, many are faced with difficult decisions. They not only have to tackle their professional entry into the world of work, but also gain an idea of how they imagine a successful life with their profession. "Career coaching" can provide valuable impetus and help with decision-making by determining where you stand.
Objectives of the workshop
At the end of their doctorate, most people reach a point where they want to critically question their own development path and examine the extent to which their idea of their future career is in line with themselves and their desired life situation. Specific questions could be:
- "I'm happy with my subject! What direction should my career take now? I don't yet have a concrete idea of a professional role in which I feel comfortable and could be successful."
- "I have the opportunity to join a company. Which one suits me - or which company do I actually fit in with?"
- "My professional focus is clear, but what interdisciplinary qualities actually make me special? What impulses do I want to set? What challenges do I enjoy and how can I get to the heart of the matter?"
- "I'm looking for a balance between my private and professional life. How can I achieve this?"
The focus of interest here is the desire to clarify one's own motives, abilities, inclinations and interests in order to be able to make well-founded professional decisions. To this end, they develop a clear profile.
The workshop "Career Coaching - My Career Profile" offers doctoral candidates this clarification aid and creates an incentive to take a closer look at their career path and to network with other doctoral candidates.
Course of the workshop
In the workshop, doctoral candidates go through a location analysis and gain clarity about their own career goals. The aim is to develop a profile of values, interests, qualifications and skills in a short space of time and to clarify the question - what do I actually want and where should my professional journey take me next? Participants receive essential feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. It becomes clear to them which fields of activity are suitable or not.
Teaching methods:
The didactic and methodological focus is on practical work and experience-oriented exercises in changing small groups, supported by the coach. This group work is supplemented by short theoretical inputs and reflection rounds in plenary sessions as well as peer counseling.
Various analysis models are used to approach the topic from different perspectives.

The German scientific landscape is a complex system of intertwined and competing actors.
The federal and state governments agree on the main features of science policy, but have very different responsibilities. Higher education institutions and universities are opposed to non-university research institutions.
Research funding takes place in the interplay between state and private third-party funders and foundations.
How and via which committees, platforms and think tanks do the various players control their cooperation and thus the science system?
Who has what interests and pursues them by what means?
An overview with an opportunity for questions and further discussion.

The methods and procedures in the recruiting process change through the use of the Internet and new media - but one thing always remains the same: as an applicant, you must be able to describe to the employer in a brief and address-oriented manner that you are the right person for the job.
Before applying, however, it is important to know your own skills profile and how you can identify interesting jobs or activities. - And after the written application, there is an oral or practical interview situation if you are successful: there are not only new trends in recruiting in the area of written applications, the "classic interview" is no longer the only tool used in the selection process.
In the workshop, you will learn how to put your personal profile into words in a convincing and address-oriented way and, on this basis, how to create a cover letter and a meaningful CV - with specific reference to a job advertisement or (in the case of unsolicited applications) with reference to a field of work and an employer.
One focus of the workshop is on applications via online portals and the new online recruiting trends - another: everything you need to know about job interviews and assessment situations.
Participation:
- To participate, you will need a laptop or computer with audio/video capability (microphone and camera). You will also need a stable internet connection.
- You will receive an individual login code for the Moodle course room for the workshop on 16.10.2020 at the latest.
- Preparation phase - prerequisite for participation: approx. 2h, free time management, 16-21.10.2020: in the Moodle course room you will find material and tasks for preparation. These tasks will be supervised by the trainer if necessary.
- on the two online presence dates we will work together on interactive learning situations from 9 am to approx. 1.30 pm (short breaks)
- Transfer phase: approx. 2h, free time allocation, 24.-30.10.2020: in the Moodle course room you will receive feedback on documents, application profiles etc., can ask further questions and exchange ideas with the trainer and the other participants.

Why do some people find it easy to achieve their goals, while others tend to lose out? Negotiation is a craft that can be learned and for which there are tools and strategies.
Negotiating is our daily business. We do it day in, day out and in very different situations and contexts: We negotiate about objectives at work, about the salary we are aiming for, about vacations or even how tasks can be distributed sensibly and fairly.
Most people don't think about how they go about this. This often happens unconsciously and rather intuitively - usually with very different results.
Objective of the workshop
The aim of this workshop is to consciously examine your personal negotiation behavior and improve it in order to be able to deal professionally and successfully even in difficult situations and with challenging negotiating partners.
The key questions are:
- What negotiation strategies do I use and how can I be successful and achieve good results?
- How can I achieve more than a compromise in difficult negotiation situations and with difficult partners?
- How can I negotiate fairly with my negotiating partner and at the same time be tough on the issue?
- How can I consciously integrate negotiation strategies into my everyday life and assert myself better?
The workshop is about how you can develop negotiation strategies that are really convincing and find new ways to turn dead ends into common goals.
You will learn to assess the personality and negotiating behavior of others. You will learn procedures, strategies, methods and attitudes for conducting negotiations according to the principles of the Harvard concept and put these into practice in negotiation exercises.
You will have the opportunity to bring in your own negotiation situations, try them out and receive feedback in order to improve your negotiation skills.
Didactic - methodical means:
In order to reach the participants in a sustainable and practical way, the didactic-methodical focus is on the application of theory using own "focal points" in cooperation as well as collegial exchange and advice in the group.

Workshop leader: Dr. Hakan Gür, Clausthal International Center
24-26.11.2020, from 17-20.15, in German (min. B2 level), but participants can communicate in English. Registrations until 09.11.2020 (graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de). The workshop unfortunately has to be postponed.
The aim of the workshop is to develop intercultural sensitivity. It is therefore suitable for all those who will later or are already working with members of other cultures or who have to find their way in a foreign culture.
Due to the restrictions of the corona pandemic, practical simulation exercises unfortunately have to be dispensed with. We will therefore try to sensitize ourselves to intercultural differences in international groups and train our intercultural communication skills in an online version.
The following key topics will play an important role: Cultural models and the basics of (intercultural) communication, perception and stereotyping, foreignness and culture shock as well as dealing with intercultural misunderstandings, so-called critical incidents. Solutions are shown for this.
Workshop leaders: Dr. Jörg Schröder and Mirjam Daum, Clausthal International Center

TU Clausthal uses the content management system TYPO3 to provide websites. It is used to create websites and allows you to manage and maintain content independently.
Since the homepage is the core component of the external presentation, updates are particularly important here, both in terms of external visibility and as a signal effect internally.
TU Clausthal has been online with a new website since July 1, 2019. The homepage is the university's showcase and an important marketing tool. The pages of the facilities, institutes, etc. are gradually being implemented.
The Typo3 training course is aimed at employees of Clausthal University of Technology who manage and maintain websites.
Contents:
- Basic overview of TYPO3
- Frontend and backend
- The Typo3 page tree - creating, changing and deleting pages
- Creating page content with different page content types

December
03.12.2020, 15-17.30, in English language.
This workshop - in cooperation with the Graduate Academy - aims at the development of the writing skills and specialized language required for PhD candidates writing in academic settings. The language practiced in this course goes beyond the B2/ C1 level of the CEFR to enable the participants to express themselves appropriately and effectively in a scientific and academic context.
The workshop consists of three sessions. Following each session, the participants assess and edit their own academic paper together with the workshop presenter.
Workshop leader: Dr. Hakan Gür, International Center Clausthal
09.12.2020, 14-16 h, in German language. Registration until 25.11.2020 (graduiertenakademie@tu-clausthal.de).
As a scientist, you increasingly come across topics such as data management plans, reusability of research data or research data repositories. Reference is also often made to simply upholding "good scientific practice". The topic often comes up shortly before an important deadline, so that quick action is required.
The question may be asked at this point as to who can still find the time to research such a topic extensively - in addition to their work in the laboratory, on the test bench or researching the literature. (However, if it does become important for your own work, you quickly run out of time or ask someone who seems to be familiar with it).
This is where the training on research data management should come in: what can be done at the beginning of the research project so that, if such a problem arises, it can be dealt with without additional effort. Even small measures to adapt daily work can save a lot of time in the long term. Above all, the aspect of "organizing and structuring" should be considered in the context of research data management and explained during this event.
Of course, we will also get to know the tools and aids already available at TU Clausthal. Research data management is not the same for every scientist and not for every subject area, so please bring your questions and problems to the event.
The event will be livestreamed via BBB. The access data as well as a small preliminary survey on thematic priorities will be sent by e-mail in good time before the event.
