Second publication right and cumulative doctorate

Many dissertations are written as a complete work, a so-called monograph. However, if you have published several publications during your doctorate, the question may arise as to whether it makes sense to do a cumulative doctorate.

In some subject areas, especially in the natural sciences, it is possible to summarize and submit individual articles, usually published in specialist journals. This type of dissertation is called a cumulative, publication or collective dissertation.

The further conditions for a cumulative dissertation are stipulated in the doctoral degree regulations (§12, doctoral degree regulations). Attention must be paid to the so-called secondary publication right (§38, Copyright Act).

If you have published academic articles in specialist journals that you would like to use in a cumulative dissertation, please contact your publisher to find out about the situation regarding secondary publication. Many publishers offer publication agreements that allow secondary publications, e.g. after a six to 12-month embargo period. Second publications in the form of a post-print version are often also possible.
